Lagos Must Be A Beautiful City - Fashola
Jan 31, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday reiterated his determination to ensure that Lagos remains a beautiful city.
Governor Fashola who spoke during a meeting with stakeholders in the Outdoor advertising world at the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Authority (LASAA) office at Alausa also said the government would ensure that it changes the unpleasant image which the state has courted for so long.
He emphasized that “we are dreaming of a new and beautiful Lagos which would be a reference point for best practices that you can find anywhere in the world”.
Governor Fashola said the meeting was convened to open up on the goings on in the sector by letting stakeholders know what the government is planning, where it is coming from and where it is going.
He added that the meeting says a lot about the prosperity which everyone aspires for and how to achieve peace, harmony and all the good things which people have always referenced to outside the Nigerian shores.
While welcoming the stakeholders on board what he termed ‘a strategic partnership’, Governor Fashola added that it is a great journey that would be rewarding to everyone particularly the stakeholders.
The Governor also explained that with the quality of what he has observed at the LASAA office complex, the government has demonstrated that if leaders continue to dream dreams, efforts should be intensified to deliver on such dreams.
“We are showing people that it can be done. We will not ask the people to do what we cannot do. The more of this kind of office we can have in Lagos , the more we can become a reference point”, he added.
Governor Fashola said part of the activities that the LASAA has come up with since inception includes provision of new street directional signs as well as provision of street lights to beautify the roads and provide security.
He said the agency has also succeeded in regulating outdoor advertising by removing the clutter which had characterized advertising and complementing the environmental initiative of the present government.
While responding, the stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the regulation re-organization of outdoor advertising as well as beautification of Lagos which currently spearhead are very important steps LASAA is embarking upon is a must, which would not only ensure effectiveness of advertising but lead to a consolidation of the sector.
While promising that they are ready to pay more for the progress of the state, they appealed for stabilization in the years to come so that business can be done with some level of certainty.
