Badagry Indigenes Pledge Support for Energy City Project

Feb 23, 2008 - The members of the Agori Descendants Association of Badagry (ADB) have expressed readiness to cooperate with the Lagos State Government in citing a 130 megawatts energy city project in the area.

Speaking with newsmen at the unveiling of the energy city masterplan by Governor Babatunde Fashola on Saturday in Lagos , the Chairman of the association, Prince Johnson Ogun said the community would provide assistance and support to the stakeholders on the project to ensure its success.

Prince Johnson Ogun also stated that the project would fast track the development of the area, in addition to providing employment opportunities to many indigenes of the area and Nigerians in general.

He praised the Governor Babatunde Fashola led administration for its initiative on the visionary project that would help explore and boost tourism in Badagry.

Prince Ogun challenged the Federal Government to emulate what the state government has done in Badagry by going a step further in formulating policies that would stimulate growth in the tourism sector.

The chairman added that “ Nigeria cannot continue to depend on oil alone. Most countries of the world sustain its economy only from tourism earnings and there is no reason why Nigeria cannot do it’’.

The Energy City Project which began in February 2007 would be completed in 2011. The Energy City Project is in collaboration with a consortium of foreign based companies and is expected to generate about 130 megawatts of energy for the state.

In addition, the energy city which is to occupy about 180 hectares of land would also help open  up the Lagos coastal waters.
