Fashola Undertakes On The Spot Assessment Of Major On-Going Projects

Mar 21, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Friday undertook an on the spot assessment of major on going projects around the state during which he revealed at the site of the old Tejuosho market that over 79 bids have so far been received on the construction of a new market.

Governor Fashola also said that the bids are being sorted out and that very soon, the site would be handed over to the selected contractor for rebuilding the market.

He also explained that he undertook the tour without the full complement of his cabinet members and aides in order to allow his hardworking cabinet members enjoy the holidays and for him to see first hand what the contractors are doing with tax payers money.

The Governor who also inspected a building donated by the Late Lady Oyinkan Abayomi as a child welfare centre at Legico to Lagos Government, but which has been taken over by squatters said the state plans to locate a floating restaurant with other tourist attractions in the area.

At Murtala Mohammed Way , Ebute Metta, Governor Fashola inspected on- going road expansion projecst in the area and told some youths whom he addressed in the area to support the government gesture by ensuring the smooth progression of the on going project.

He also informed that some parts of the old Denton Police Station would have to give way as well as some parts of the Post Office to allow completion of Murtala Mohammed Way expansion project.

The youths and other residents whom the Governor personally asked denied the allegation of extortion being leveled against officials of the contracting firm on the project. The residents said no one had demanded any money from them to link their homes with the new drainage channel being constructed.

While inspecting the level of work at the Ago Palace Way extension project, Governor Fashola informed that he caused a major change of the design of the road median when he discovered that the median was used for parking different carcass of vehicle because of its wideness.

He added that with the reduction of the median an additional lane has been created on the road thus making it easier for motorists to navigate.

The Governor also visited the site of the new Oluwole market to see the extent of work.

At the former Area C Police Divisional headquarters in Surulere which was burnt during a military police fracas, the Governor inspected on going work there and was assured by the spokesperson of the contractor on site, the Mourinho group, Mr Gbemiga Olagoke that work is going on as scheduled.

The Governor added that the present government has been very strategic in its choice of projects and contractors as it has always ensured that there is proximity of site location as demonstrated in choice of the same contractor handling the Ago Place Way extension and the LASU Iyana –Iba road expansion project.

He added that the promixity of contracts ensures that the additional cost of mobilizing and demobilizing contractors to different sites is removed.

Governor Fashola also inspected on going work at Bourdillon road, Gerrard road and Adetokunbo Ademola road as well as the Lekki Infrastructure road where two kilometres have been completed.

The Governor in an interview with newsmen later described the super active nature of the Lagos metropolis especially on a public holiday as a sign of a state that is working, adding that he is proud to be the Governor of a state that is working.

Governor Fashola added that Lagos is a city that boasts of so much energy and provides opportunities to millions of people.

On where he draws his strength from, Governor Fashola ascribes it to Almighty Allah, and the hopes and aspirations which he sees in the face of every Lagosian and the fact that they all believe in the present administration.

He informed that the present government is enjoying a warm relationship with former leaders of the state, adding that what they are demonstrating is responsible leadership which the present rulers can gain from as it is practiced in several countries overseas.

On the ongoing parley with the Federal Government on the recovery of expropriated properties of Lagos , he reassured that he has the assurance of President Umaru Yar’adua that immediately the twin committees turn in their reports, dialogue would be embraced to solve the problem.
