Fashola Inspects, Commends Work At Sura Loading Site
Nov 20, 2008 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, (SAN), Thursday expressed satisfaction at the progress of work at the Sura Transfer Loading Station in Lagos saying it will, on completion, enhance efficient waste and traffic management.
Governor Fashola, who was on an inspection visit to the site, however, lamented that the progress was being hampered by the delay in off-loading equipment needed for work at the site from the ships which, according to him, are yet to berth at the port.
Fielding questions from newsmen after being conducted round by the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Engineer Ola Oresanya, the Governor, who said he was at the site to inspect the transfer loading station that his administration promised to build in the area, declared, “it looks good so far, except that quite a number of the equipment that we need to finish it are stuck in the ports”. He added that the ships are among the large number currently waiting to berth at the ports and discharge their cargoes.
The Governor, however, commended the progress of work in spite of the absence of the needed equipment, saying that the completion would greatly enhance the efficient management of waste in the area.
“It will help us manage the disposal of waste more efficiently because all the waste coming from this part of the city and going to Olusosun will come here and they will be reprocessed and compressed and in the night, instead of having 20 or 30 trucks on the road, we need to have only two because the waste would have been compressed”, the Governor explained.
Governor Fashola said the completion of the site will not only enhance efficient waste management but will also enhance traffic management because, according to him, “the return time of the vehicles during regular waste management is also hampered by traffic”.
Earlier, on arrival at the site, Governor Fashola was conducted round the site by Engineer Oresanya who also explained to him the extent of work done and some of the hindrances being experienced by the workers due to the absence of required equipment.
