Lagos Honours 15 Gallant Police And RRS Officers For Confronting Robbers

Nov 24, 2008 - Lagos State Government on Monday accorded recognition to 15 gallant officers and men of the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police and State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who distinguished themselves during three different encounters with men of the underworld.

Speaking at the award ceremony which took place at the conference room of the Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said any society that does not reward performance will not improve.

The first category of honoured officers and men include ten officers led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mobolaji Odesanya who foiled a bank robbery attempt at Dopemu in Agege and in the process killed three of the five armed robbers, arrested two with a large cache of arms and ammunition and four million naira recovered.

The second category has Inspector Micheal Ngbede who led three other policemen from the Rapid Response Squad at a duty post in Mile 2, Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Amuwo Odofin to intercept a Mitsubishi lancer GLX Lagos commercial taxi loaded with 2660 rounds of T.62mm live ammunitions, 60 empty magazines of AK47 rifles concealed in three bags of beans.

Another gallant officer who was recognized is ASP Mike Onalo (Rtd) attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Panti who singlehandedly dislodged a gang of six armed robbers who were dispossessing innocent citizens of their valuables in a traffic holdup at Anthony Village on Ikorodu Road.

ASP Onalo engaged the six robbers in a scuffle, shooting one dead, disarming another while arresting four other members of the gang as well as the recovery of two rifles and a stolen car being used by the robbers

Governor Fashola added that equipment alone cannot win the battle to sustain law and order, but that the society needs men who are passionate about the job they are doing.

According to the Governor;”Our greatest resource is our people. If they are bad, we owe a duty to better it and if they are good we need to reward performance and recognize merit”.

“We will remember you when you do well. I hope this would inspire others to emulate you”, the Governor added

He added that by this gesture, the state government hopes to encourage the police officers to do more because personally he can assert that the state command has recorded more successes than failures.

He expressed the hope that the time would come when people in this part of the world can take acts of bravery as displayed by the Police officers for granted as it is done in other societies which we seek to emulate or surpass.

He lamented that it is only when Policemen are unsuccessful that they are recognized, asking that they need to also be recognized when they are successful as there are bound to be setbacks from time to time since no society in the world can claim to be totally crime free.

Governor Fashola while thanking officers and men of the Nigerian Police for the wonderful job they are doing on behalf of Lagosians, promised the Policemen that every time that they look behind for support, the state Government would always be there as a pillar for them.

He added that the Police officer who singlehandedly engaged six armed robbers in a traffic holdup could have decided to walk away while those who recovered a large chunk of cash from a foiled bank robbery could have kept the cash but chose to report about the incidences to the Commissioner of Police.

Speaking earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibo commended the seal and passion of the Lagosians to fight crime at all times, describing the merit award ceremony as a landmark event which is different from the tradition.

Mr Akpoyibo added that the successes recorded by the Policemen is an attestation that there are no biological deficiencies in the men of the Nigerian Police , saying with the provision of equipment there is nothing impossible for the Police.

He repeated his earlier warning to all criminals to either leave Lagos now or repent from their criminal ways as failure to do this would only result in the law catching up with them.

Later in an interview with newsmen, ACP Odesanya said the gesture of the Lagos State Government has given Policemen more confidence on the job and would ensure that efforts are redoubled henceforth in tackling crime.

Also speaking, ASP Mike Onalo (Rtd) thanked God for everything, saying the recognition though unexpected would encourage others to emulate the honourees so that they can also be appreciated some day.

Among those recognized were ACP Mobolaji Odesanya, ASP Samuel Adetunji, Sgt Oladimeji Olatunji, Sgt Toyin Adeniyi, Corporal Adebesin Muyiwa, Inspector Nwakwe Edwin, Sgt Samuel Agbor, Sgt Joseph Biyabura, Sgt Mohammed Ali and Sgt Anthony Zomo for the foiled bank robbery attempt at Dopemu in Agege.
