Lagos Govt To Prosecute Distributors Of Pornographic Materials
May 29, 2009 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) has issued an Executive Order empowering the Chairman of the State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences to enter any known place of distribution of pornographic materials and seize such offending materials.
According to the Executive Order no EO/BRF/013 of 2009 dated Friday May 29, 2009 the Task Force Chairman is also empowered to hand over any person arrested in connection with such matters to the Police for prosecution by the Honourable Attorney General in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.
According to the Order, it had become necessary to act decisively in view of the observed flagrant display, broadcasting and sale of pornographic materials on the streets of Lagos and the grave danger it portends to the social health of the people, particularly young children who are likely to read, see or hear the matters contained or embodied in such obscene materials.
The Governor affirmed that there is therefore the need to rid all public places of all the pornographic materials.
He added that major bus stops such as Oshodi, Ikeja, Pen Cinema, Ogba, Ojodu, Iyana- Ipaja, Yaba, Ojuelegba, Ketu, Mile 12, Mile 2, Ojoo, Ikotun, Alaba International Market and even traffic routes have all been noted as points of sale of the obscene materials.
