Lagos Now To Prosecute Touts Who Pose As Local Govt Officials

Jun 4, 2009 - Lagos State Government will henceforth prosecute any individual who disguise on the streets and roads as Local Government Traffic officials to extort money from motorists in accordance with the State Environmental Traffic Laws and Regulations.

The State Government’s position was stated on Thursday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre Alausa during a press conference addressed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Prince Rotimi Agunsoye.

According to him, Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) who gave the directive has also directed that no person should dispose refuse indiscriminately as cleaning up of the resultant mess is causing government at all levels substantial resources.

Prince Agunsoye also advised motorists not to succumb to any form of intimidation by impostors on the roads who disguise as Local Government Traffic officials.

He emphasized that no person, group of persons or organizations have the statutory right to collect any form of levy or fine from motorists in Lagos State without due authorization from relevant agencies of government.

He added that all such revenues are expected to be paid into banks, adding that the lists of approved taxes and levies would be published immediately the law is passed.

Prince Agunsoye added that in furtherance of the foregoing, the State and local governments have already embarked upon massive infrastructural developments across the State.

He added that these is being done to ensure that the state achieves the sustainable development objectives of the present administration.
