Fashola Urges Peaceful Co-Existence As Ramadan Begins

Aug 21, 2009 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Friday joined Muslim faithful in observing the first Taraweeh prayers before the commencement of Ramadan, charging Islamic clerics to use the period of the fasting to preach against racial and religious discrimination.

Governor Fashola who spoke at the State House Mosque, Ikeja urged the clerics to ensure that there is peaceful co-existence among the people.

The Governor urged the people to join hands to live peacefully and realize that irrespective of anything, all human beings worship the same and only one God.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Alhaji Tunde Balogun prayed for the Governor and for continued peaceful co-existence of the people.

Most of the clerics who preached at the occasion enjoined all Muslims to use the period of fasting as one for sober reflection and for seeking forgiveness from God.

It was their view that fasting is very compulsory for all able bodied and healthy Muslims.

Prominent among those who witnessed the first prayers session were Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan, Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, Alhaja Bintu Tinubu, Chief Imam of Lagos Alhaji Akinola Ibrahim, Chief Imam of Anwar- Ul- Islam, Alhaji A.B Yussuf and Chief Imams of the five divisions of the state.
