Fashola Charges All To Act Fast Against Dangers Of Environmental Damages

Oct 4, 2009 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Sunday warned that the whole planet is in peril as a result of damages to the environment and that man must act fast and quickly to slow down the dangers that might come with it.

Governor Fashola who spoke at the Lagos Polo Club, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi while being inducted as a member of the Club, added, “We all need to be more sensitive, more concerned about how we use nature gifts such as water, power and the impact on the climate.

“In every little thing that you do such as that computer that you are not using, put it off, that extra bulb in your room that you are not using, put it off, your extra air-conditioner that you are not using, put it off. The truth is that it does not matter what anybody is doing anywhere, if we are not doing our bit, the planet may still be in danger”, Governor Fashola added.

According to the Governor: “This is not about under developed or developed economies, we all share the same planet. Issues of economic prosperity or lack of it depends so much today on how the environment shifts”.

The Governor added that the Lagos Government is continuing in its efforts in cleaning up the city and the state, adding that the state is getting cleaner with the challenges of flooding being well managed.

Governor Fashola also acknowledged the support which members of the club in various spheres of life as representatives of the larger community of Lagos State have extended to the present government since its assumption of office.

He reiterated his plea to critics of the administration to always provide alternatives to all policies of the administration which they criticize, adding that when they criticize the administration, it helps in ensuring better performance.

The Lagos State helmsman also appealed to the entire members of the club to ensure that an end is put to the issue of stray horses that is sadly becoming a part of the Lagos landscape.

Governor Fashola promised that as a member of the Polo club, he would be one of the champions to work with the club on the issue of ending the menace of stray horses in the metropolis.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Polo Club, Mr Gbenga Akinrinde said the Polo Club was founded in 1939 with many of its members also playing the game of Polo.

Giving reasons for the Governor’s induction, Akinrinde said Governor Fashola (SAN) is regarded as a natural member of the Polo club because he has true passion for governance and also because he believes in the green initiative, adding that the Governor also has true empathy for the common people with his approach to governance being truly exemplary.

As a symbolic sign of his admission into the club, Governor Babatunde Fashola was later presented with a Polo saddle and a white horse by Mr Gbenga Akinrinde.
