Lagos Security Council Meets, Pledges To Re-Enact Yuletide Zero Crime Rate

Dec 2, 2009 - Lagos State Security Council on Wednesday held its last meeting for the year 2009, promising to re-enact the zero crime rate recorded in the State during last year’s yuletide season.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting which took place at the State House, Marina, Commissioner of Police, Mr Marvel Akpoyibo said the council has put several measures in place to ensure safety of life and property.

“I want to advise everybody to be vigilant and stay alert. All suspicious elements should be reported to the Police. People should not forget to call our Toll Free Emergency numbers of 767 and 112 at all times. It is not only when you are being attacked, but even when you see a neighbour’s house being attacked, call the Police and we will respond immediately”.

Mr Akpoyibo also cautioned residents to be vigilant when trying to pick a ride on motorcycles otherwise known as okada, adding that if it discovered that an okada rider is carrying arms or anything that looks suspicious, a call should be put through to the emergency numbers immediately.

He reiterated that it is not only okadas that members of the public should be wary of, they should also be very cautious in taking vehicles like kabukabus or one chance buses by ensuring you do not take a bus with an all male occupants but rather alert the Police.

“We all owe ourselves a duty of care. We must ensure that we collaborate to make the December month totally crime free”.

On the Lagos State University issue, the Police Commissioner assured all staff and students returning to work and lectures that they are free to do so, adding that the Police would provide adequate security for them.

Said he: “All willing students must be allowed to conclude their academic programmes like their colleagues elsewhere. All those who are trying to create crises at LASU also have children, but would not want their children to stagnate. All students should be at liberty to go to school. We would provide security for them as well as the staff as they return to work and lecture. Nobody would be molested on account of same”.

He also warned against the storage of combustible materials such as petrol and chemicals at home, adding that it should be avoided as much as possible to prevent fire outbreaks and resultant loss of lives.

The meeting was attended by Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Joe Ochoga, Navy Commodore Patrick Ozojiofor, Airforce Group Captain John Udo, The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Lanre Babalola and chaired by Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN).
