The Church Has Played Significant Role In Nation Building - Fashola

Dec 9, 2009 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday joined the congregation of well meaning Nigerians at the 90th Anniversary of the Diocese of Lagos Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), with an assertion that the church has played a significant role in nation building.

According to Governor Fashola who spoke in a media chat after attending the 90th Year Eucharist Thanksgiving Service which was held at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, the nation building has been achieved through its introduction of formal education while assisting with the development of healthcare.

Governor Fashola explained that through the efforts of pioneers like late Herbert Macaulay who agitated for the independence of Nigeria and so many other successors of the pioneers who have continued from where they stopped, the 90th Year of the Church of Nigeria was worthy of celebration.

Earlier in his homily, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Peter Akinola noted that if the church had not given Nigerians a sound education, there would have been no legacy for Nigerians to rely on today.

He asserted that those holding key positions in Nigeria today are all products of the Church.

Reverend Akinola admonished all those who have benefitted through the Church to have a rethink anytime they are called upon to participate in any development of the Church.

Prominent among those who attended the celebration were the former Anglican Archbishop of Lagos, Reverend Abiodun Adetiloye, the Diocesan and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, the Most Reverend Ephraim Adebola Ademowo and former Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Dr Leke Pitan.
