Commissioning/Handing Over Of The Reconstructed Police Station At Makoko, Yaba
Dec 10, 2009 - Today’s occasion gives us another opportunity to once again demonstrate our commitment to ensure that Lagos residents are well protected.
I am delighted to welcome Mr. Marvin Akpoyibo, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Hon. Jide Jimoh, Chairman, Yaba LCDA and the Legislative Council, Senior Police Officers. I warmly congratulate the Baale of Makoko and the Council of Chiefs, Community Leaders, Market Men and Women and the People of Makoko Community on today’s special occasion when we are commissioning this newly reconstructed, Abuja Type III model, Police Station.
You will recall that when I paid an inspection visit to your community to commission the Fish-Smoking Stalls, with modern facilities, I observed the dilapidated structure serving security purpose in your community. I was unhappy, because, it did not fit into our vision of providing effective and qualitative security for the lives and the property of our people.
Today, we are all here to witness the handing over of a standard Police Station, which will offer you protection against crimes and criminal elements. This facility is to ensure effective policing of this community as well as provide a befitting working environment for the men of the Nigeria Police.
Let me remind you, ladies and gentlemen that we came to you and you freely gave us your mandate to serve your interests. We have been doing our best to ensure that we provide infrastructure to enhance your well-being. And we have taken the provision of security as a priority. We established the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to source for additional funds from well-meaning members of the Public and Corporate Organizations. This has enabled us to provide the necessary equipment and motivation for security personnel serving in Lagos State.
We have provided a communication network with modern Base Stations, Walkie-Talkies and other essential equipment, which will alert all Police Stations, Security Patrol Vehicles and all Security Personnel at any time a crime is reported.
We also provided Patrol Boats and Gun Boats for the Marine Police to combat crime on our Inland Waterways, especially, Piracy and Smuggling. About three weeks ago, the 57 LGAs/LCDAs jointly provided 104nos. Patrol Vehicles to assist the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the State Police Command to combat armed robbery and respond to distress calls on time.
Our administration has, also, provided 10nos. APCs for the Security Personnel to assist in crowd control and maintenance of public peace and security. I am happy to inform you that, these interventions have translated to tremendous success by reducing incidents of violent crimes in the State by 79.9%.
In spite of these achievements, I want to assure you that our administration will not rest on our oars. As I often say, no society is crime-free. We are resolved to stay ahead of criminals, especially during this festive season.
Two days ago, we went further in our commitment to provide effective security of life and property of every resident in Lagos State through the commissioning of 2nos Bell 412 Multi-Purpose Helicopters for aerial surveillance. It would also complement the efforts of Police and security operatives and help in fire-fighting as well as search and rescue.
We are prepared to be more proactive in our efforts to combat and nip in the bud, criminal activities in our society. We shall continue to provide a more conducive environment for our policemen to work.
Once again, I urge the entire Makoko Community to see the reconstruction of the Abuja Type III Model Police Station in your community as a testimony of our interest in this community.
This Police Station has modern facilities, such as solar energy to power all equipment and appliances, a treated borehole to provide water and a perimeter fence among other things. We will make sure that this Model Police Station is provided by our administration, in all urban and rural communities in the State.
Let me use this opportunity to commend Hon. Jide Jimoh, Chairman of Yaba LCDA for his support through the provision of furniture for the Police Station. I am happy at the transformation that has taken place in Yaba LCDA so far, because the benefits of the various programmes of our Party, the Action Congress (AC) in healthcare, education, road maintenance, job creation and economic empowerment are there for all to see.
Our administration also appreciates the support and co-operation as well as the selfless service of Mr. Marvin Akpoyibo, Commissioner of Police, and the Officers and Men of the Lagos State Police Command. Indeed, the cooperation among all Security Agencies operating in Lagos State has led in no small measure to the reduction of crime rate in the State.
It is with joy and deep sense of satisfaction that I commission the reconstructed Abuja Type III Model Police Station in Makoko Community and, formally, handover to the Lagos State Police Command for the effective provision and maintenance of security and peace in the community to the glory of God and the benefit of the people.
Thank you all for your attention and God bless.
Eko O Ni Baje O!
