Lagos Flags Off Energy Awareness Programme For Students

Aug 14, 2011 - In furtherance of its ongoing sustainable power solution initiatives, Lagos State Government will on Monday, August 15 launch its innovative energy awareness programme for students aged 11 to 14 years.

Tagged the Lagos State Energy Awareness Programme, the initiative is a behavioural change campaign and it aims to stimulate energy awareness culture among students within their schools and communities at large.

A total of 400 students from 20 secondary schools in the state have been selected to take part in the first phase of the programme. Twenty students per school within the ages of 11 and 14 were picked for the programme based on their outstanding performance at the 2011 Governor's School Awards.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Private Partnership, Mrs. Damilola Ogunbiyi, said the programme is expected to run from Monday 15, August to Friday 16, September 2011 with a week break in-between for the Ramadan festivities.

According to her, the programme will avail participants the opportunity to gain basic knowledge in electricity generation and power conservation. ''A particular emphasis is placed on the different sources of energy as well as different segments of the electricity value chain,'' she said.

Ogunbiyi revealed further that the programme is being done in conjunction with the EKO Project, adding that it entails the use of an innovative energy awareness curriculum that highlights the background and latest advances in energy conservation and efficiency in a practical way.

She said part of the outcome of the programme is to raise champions of energy conservation in their respective schools and community after undergoing the one-month exercise.

"This is an innovative programme which aims at inculcating the habit of efficient use of available electricity in children right from their early life", she noted.

Other components of the programme are quiz competition, site tour of state-owned power projects and a dedicated website www.lagospowerkids.gov.ng to enhance learning.
